Dear Scarabs and Supporters:
On behalf of all The
East Technical High School Alumni Association (ETAA), we sincerely thank you for attending the Alumni’s “Walk
4 Dollars 4 Scholars” and the Street Name Dedication “Scarab Way”. This event was held
on April 30, 2011 at East Technical High School where over two hundred and fifty alumni, family and friends were in attendance.
We were thankful for the wonderful weather that allowed us to truly enjoy the day’s festivities.
Because
of you, and the “Scarab Pride” that flows rampantly through our veins, The East Tech Alumni Association raised
approximately $10,000.00 to award to East Tech students. This is absolutely awesome and a huge accomplishment.
Just
a few highlights: The event began with a meet and greet in the hallway area outside of the gym, visiting vendor tables and
purchasing alumni gear “Scarab Way or the Highway”. Then all were rallied to the gymnasium
where Line dancing (warm ups) and music by DJ Paul Bryant. Plum City Posse Band graced us with great music!
Inspirational words from the GradsNet Foundation, CEO Faith Spence encouraging alumni to stay together in the support
of educating our youth. The East Tech Jr. R.O.T.C. students saluted the flag and led us into the National
Anthem. Then the real fun began when alumni lined up behind the Jr. R.O.T.C. Carrying the East Tech Alumni
Banner were Vicky Herndon and Bernice Herndon both from the class of 73’.
The walk route began as alumni traveled
out the front door of East Tech to 55th Street to Woodland, down Woodland to East 40th Street, across 40th to Quincy, then
up Quincy to 55th Street and across to Scovill. Cars in passing honked their horns, folks shouting “Go
Scarabs”. The Cleveland Police Department gave us special attention in that they followed us throughout
the walk and provided us with their microphone to speak to the audience. Special thanks are in order for CPD Officer Gerri
Butler 73' and Commander Calvin Williams of 3rd District! Alumni then gathered around for the dedication
where the Class of 74' began to chant the “The Mighty Mighty Scarabs” and then all alumni chimed in.
Ward 5 Councilwoman, Phyllis Cleveland 75' expressed gratitude and gave recognition to alum, George Dixon 71'
for the vision of "Scarab Way" and the Alumni Association for bringing it to life. Alumni President,
Greta Stakely-Humphrey introduced the school administrators to alumni as well as informed alumni of the great partnership
that exist in nurturing scarab pride for our future alum and the East Tech community. It is our hope that
"Scarab Way" will ignite scarab pride for the current students! In conclusion of the street name
dedication, Mr. LaMorne Porter 59' led alumni in the singing of the Alma mater.
It was a grand day where Scarabs from various
classes gathered in fellowship and celebrated our Alma mater. Because of your support, The East Technical
High School Alumni Association is becoming a strong organization where we as a unit assist our East Tech students with meeting
their financial need for college and training programs.
We are looking forward to seeing you all at the upcoming "Scarabs Forever Scholarship Dinner
Dance" held on June 18, 2011 at the Sheraton Hotel/Hopkins Airport. For tickets, call 216.571.4846.
If your class is awarding a scholarship award, please contact us as soon as possible so that your student and class
representative can be included in the program.
Again, Thanks for all that you do!
The East Tech Alumni Board of Directors
